It was a long day at Shire Hall and it began with a demo. Actually there were two demos: the first and larger one was from Unison protesting about the proposal to raise councillor allowances (see below). The second was from Climate Rush Cambridge who gave out paper windmills in protest against the council’s recent decision to ban windfarms on council land.

The county council’s cabinet this week added a sensible rider to its decision regarding the first primary school at Northstowe. It was asked to endorse a proposal that the school should be ready in either 2016 or when the 100th dwelling is occupied, whichever is earlier. The former date despite development of the new town being expected to start in 2013.

Construction will begin next week on a high-quality cycle link between Cottenham and Histon in a bid to get more people cycling. Sue is a member of the Fire Authority and reports that a further £700,000 of cuts could be made to frontline fire services in Cambridgeshire. They could come on top of the £4 million worth of savings already agreed and the £1.3 million worth of cuts to frontline services to be discussed in October. The extra cuts could lead to Cambridge’s second fire engine being taken out of service at night and the merging of two Peterborough fire stations.
