In July fire forced the closure of Cottenham’s Co-op Store and the past few months have brought into sharp focus the unique position that the shop has in the village.With its boarded up shop front and roof still bearing the scars of the work of the emergency services, it was a depressing sight in the centre of the village and rumours abounded about the future of the store. But tomorrow, 08 December, a new look, temporary shop opens. Work still remains to be done to the rear storage area which saw the most severe damage but, until that re-building work is complete, a temporary sales area slightly smaller than before the fire will restore this much needed facility to the village.Once the work is complete the shop will be bigger than before.

Dscn5322_sue_and_co-opSince the terrible fire earlier this year Cottenham residents have been hoping that a new, improved Co-op would be opening in their village as soon as possible. And thanks to frantic work all round it looks like it will be open before Xmas.

Dscn4259_freedom_busThe County Council’s bus consultation ends 4pm on Friday 9 Dec 11. The Council will use the results of this consultation to help it to decide whether or not to continue supporting the weekly 110 ‘freedom bus’ service from Histon and Impington to Ely and the daily 106 service from Cottenham to Ely.

The good news is that it allows communities to set their own speed limits; they will not need the approval of the County Council as long as they consult properly. The bad news is that they will have to pay for them themselves.

The meeting took place last Monday and Andy was accompanied by Ross Burton.
